Our Research
Exploiting UK excellence in quantum networking research to deliver the future of communications technology
The IQN Hub establishes a critical mass of multi-disciplinary expertise in next-generation quantum networking technologies and quantum-safe security approaches. To achieve our vision of a robust, totally secure “quantum internet”, our research is focused on 6 key themes:
Quantum Memories
Effective quantum memories are essential to establishing quantum information technologies over long distances without trusted nodes. We are investigating which approaches will best suit deployment in metropolitan-scale and large-scale quantum networks.
Dynamic Networking and Entanglement Distribution
This research investigates network architectures, routing protocols, switching technology and multi-party quantum entanglement strategies required to deliver scalable quantum networks at the metropolitan and national scale.
Satellite Quantum Communications
We are strengthening the UK’s leadership in space-based quantum communications by working with the Satellite Platform for Optical Quantum Communications (SPOQC) low-earth orbit demonstrator and coordinating the post-launch mission. We are continuing to develop our Hub Optical Ground Station (HOGS) for low-earth orbit quantum communications with SPOQC and other international missions.
Quantum Components
New critical quantum components will be required to establish effective quantum information networks. The Hub is developing new switching devices, detectors, and sources for optical communications networks.
Quantum Protocols and Networking Theory
Quantum networks will require entirely new methodologies to deliver secure, reliable and high-performance communications. We are developing new protocols to exploit quantum phenomena, drive new applications and certify performance.
Quantum-safe Secure Communication & Standards
There is significant crossover between new quantum communications and the current cybersecurity landscape. Our research is building a framework for standardisation of quantum technologies to ensure security and access in a post-quantum world.
